History of ENSTP
Following its independence, Algeria quickly recognized the urgent need to cultivate a new generation of leaders and engineers equipped to tackle the challenges of nation-building. In this spirit, the École Nationale Supérieure des Travaux Publics (ENSTP), originally named the École des Ingénieurs des Travaux Publics (EITP), was established in 1966. As the first institution in Algeria dedicated to civil engineering, public works, and hydraulics, ENSTP has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s national development strategy from the very beginning.
The mission of ENSTP was straightforward yet vital: to develop the talent necessary for constructing the nation’s infrastructure. Over the course of nearly six decades, the school has continually adapted to meet Algeria's evolving needs, remaining committed to its core objective through each reform.
A significant moment occurred in 1987 when the institution became a national higher education institute under dual oversight. From that point on, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research took charge of academic management, while the Ministry of Public Works handled administrative responsibilities. This structural shift allowed ENSTP to diversify its offerings, particularly through the introduction of postgraduate programs, and to establish itself as a leading centre for research and scientific development.
In 1998, the school entered a new era as a fully accredited university institution, exclusively governed by the framework of Higher Education. This change was not just a formal adjustment; it marked the beginning of a significant challenge: to leverage its practical expertise while embracing academic and scientific advancements.
Today, ENSTP stands out on the global stage. With over 6000 Algerian engineers and more than 300 foreign engineers trained from 32 countries, including many from Africa and the Arab world, the institution has extended its influence well beyond national borders. ENSTP now represents a prestigious establishment, playing a crucial role in fostering knowledge, skills, and competencies both domestically and internationally. With its broad vision, ENSTP positions itself as a key player in training and innovation within public works and
civil engineering, significantly enhancing the expertise and competitiveness of its graduates.
